Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible that something is wrong with the audio out devise in my computer?

Comment: The audio out works fine but I seem to have a problem with the audio in. I recorded several sentences, which I spoke through the microphone, then I opened the file but nothing seemed to be recorded. Is it possible that something wrong with the audio out devise in my own computer?

Answer: The possibilities you will want to consider:
  • 1) The mic is plugged into the wrong jack on the sound card
  • 2) The system volume control for the mic has inactivated the mic
  • 3) The mic does not work
  • 4) The sound does not work

1) or 2) above are the more likely candidates. You can rule out 3) if you have another mic you can try or if you can try the mic on another computer. I would rule out 1) by trying to record connecting the mic to the other input jacks on your sound card.

We want to establish whether or not the audio out works independent of our CAAS system. There is a sound recording program that comes with Windows which you can run with Start | Run then enter sndrec32. You should see the Sound Recorder main window appear as shown below.

Use the Record button to start recording with the mic. Use the Stop button to terminate recording or playback. Use the Playback button to listen to your recording. If you cannot successfully make and playback a recording you should try adjusting the system volume controls as described below.

You can control the recording and playback properties by selecting Edit | Audio Properties. The screen below will appear from which you can select either the playback or recording volume.

On my system the settings look like this for Playback:

And look like this for recording:

The above 2 screenshots may not appear exactly as on your system as we probably have different audio devices.

If none of this works, I would suggest trying on another computer system and see if you have better luck there.
